Why bother with systems

MEET Team

Systems thinking seems so abstract and insubstantial, shouldn't we be dealing with more practical and concrete things instead? The fact is that systemic thinking does nothing but accept the reality around us for what it is, that is a very complicated mix of things that happen without being under our direct control.

So the answer is probably yes, we must have the patience to reintroduce systems thinking into our world which has become overly compartmentalized and reductionist. The point is not to oppose the systemic approach to the reductionist one, but to always have both options at hand and use them in the most effective way for the common good.

The case of Glasgow

This Glasgow case is quite well known and studied, but it is only one of many that show that to solve really important problems the systemic approach is an effective way and with very practical effects that clearly differs from many limited approaches previously practiced without success.

In this video Karyn McCluskey summarizes the path that the Scottish city has taken to get rid of the atavistic phenomenon of street violence among youth gangs. You can also read this article from the Guardian about this story. This case also shows well how to practice systemic actions a reorganization of our governance structures is often necessary.

Some of the next topics in our MEET journey are inequality, social justice, exclusion and these are typically deeply systemic aspects of our communities.

Come and play with us

That's why in our next online meeting we invite you to find out more about the world of complex systems and to do some little experiments. Have a piece of paper and a marker handy, connect using a PC to be able to participate more easily in the activities. Bring some examples of the projects you are following, they could be analyzed during the webinars. Registration for these two webinars is open and free. More about the program here.
